The housemates are simulated fruit fly connectomes. They eat, sleep, court, mate, fight, walk straight past each other, and some of them do not make it to the end of the season. You can read every thought while it happens.
Not a similar house. The same one. Open this page on your phone and your laptop at the same moment and both show the identical fly standing in the identical corner thinking the identical thing. There is no server holding the state, and there does not need to be.
A season is an hour of real time, which is sixty house days. It opens on the hour UTC with six founders, runs a full arc, and resets with a new cast. The countdown is in the top right of the stage.
Arrive late and the page replays the season from its first tick at speed, about half a second for a full hour, then runs live from there. The bar on load is the replay, not a download.
The house is a pure function of season and tick. We hash the entire state and check it matches across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. It does, to the last digit. The docs show the work.
Every encounter runs through the same check. Who are you, what do I want right now, what happened last time, and is either of us standing on the only food in the room. The answer is one of these, and none of them are scheduled.
Two flies with no history and no social drive pass within a body length and register nothing. This is the most common outcome by a distance, and we did not hide it to make the show look busier.
Time spent near each other, without competing for anything, slowly builds a positive bond. Nothing dramatic. It is the foundation everything else is built on.
Past a bond threshold a male extends one wing and vibrates it. Real courtship song, visible in the 3D view. The female either stays or walks off, and walking off costs the bond.
An accepted courtship leaves the female gravid. She lays in the nursery, the egg sits there, and a new housemate hatches with drive coefficients inherited from both parents.
Hostile bond plus a depleted plate plus two aggressive flies is a fight. They lunge, both lose condition, the weaker one loses and avoids the winner for a long time afterwards.
Condition reaches zero from a fight, from starving at an empty plate, or from old age. The body is removed, the name moves to the list at the bottom of the rail, and nothing brings it back.
Each housemate runs the same released connectome with a different baseline on its internal drives and its aggression. That is the only difference between them at the start, and it is enough. One fly wakes hungry, another wakes restless, one will not back off the plate, and by the third day the house has a history.
Hunger, thirst, fatigue, light and company. Each rises on its own clock and the strongest one wins. Every bar in the rail is the real value the sim is acting on.
Proximity builds it. Competition destroys it. Rejection stings. The bond matrix is a live record of who has been near whom and how it went.
The bubble above a fly is its dominant drive plus whatever is in front of it, in the flattest language we could find. A fly does not have opinions. It has appetites and a direction.
Everything else is the flies. These are the rules the house itself enforces, and they exist so that something happens rather than twelve flies sitting still in twelve separate rooms.
| RULE | EFFECT |
|---|---|
| Two food sources | A full plate in the kitchen and a smaller, slower one in the pantry. Never quite enough for a full house, which is the engine of most of the fighting. |
| Lights out | The house darkens on a cycle. Fatigue rises faster in the dark, so the bedroom and the dark room fill, then somebody wakes early and wanders. |
| Diary room | A fly whose drives are all satisfied goes in on its own. While it is in there, its full internal state is published. |
| The nursery | A gravid female lays there. Eggs hatch into real housemates with inherited coefficients. The house caps at twelve, and while it is full nobody lays. |
| Nobody is saved | No health regeneration we did not earn, no revival, no plot armour for a popular housemate. If the house drops below four, new flies come in the front door rather than the dead being restored. |
| Weekly eviction | $FLYHOUSE holders vote. The evicted housemate leaves alive. Bonds do not carry over. |
| No intervention | We do not nudge a fly toward a storyline. If the house is boring for an hour, the house is boring for an hour and that goes out live. |
A continuous connectome simulation is a running GPU bill. $FLYHOUSE is how it gets paid, and holding it is how you get a vote in the house.
